Hello, again! As summer progresses and the temperature keeps getting hotter and hotter, we at Paws & Play decided to bring you more important information on keeping our furballs (God bless them) safe!
Imagine walking around in 90° weather with a fur coat on… no thank you! It’s hot enough as is in our shorts and tanks, I cannot imagine wearing a head to toe coat on top of that. Unfortunately, your pups do not get to have the same luxury of strutting around in their daisy dukes and bikini tops. Here are some tips to keep them as cool and comfortable as possible and to avoid overheating this summer.
Signs of Overheating -
Excessive panting
Excessive drooling
Bright red tongue, ears, and/or gums
Vomiting
Diarrhea
Discomfort
Increased temperature
Stumbling and wobbling
Unconsciousness
If your pupper is experiencing any signs/symptoms of overheating you place them in a cool, shaded area or an air-conditioned room, wrap a wet towel around them, or place them in water if they are still conscious. If they are experiencing severe overheating or are unconscious, call and take them to a vet immediately. Calling ahead of time and wrapping them in a cool and wet towel (avoiding their face) can help the situation.
Prevention Tips -
Hopefully, no one has to experience bringing their pet to the vet due to overheating. You should always look out for signs of overheating along with utilizing the following prevention techniques to avoid this situation:
Avoid letting your pet out during the hottest part of the day
Limit outdoor exercise during very hot and humid days
Always have cool water available
Do not leave your pet in the car
Splash their head, ears, and belly with cool water
Lay out a cooling mat for them to self-regulate their body temperature
Use a fan or air conditioning to help them cool down
Shave them down (if needed) during the hotter months
There are many ways to keep your fur babies cool and safe from the heat! Whether at home or here at Paws & Play we want to make sure all of your animals are having fun during the summer months and staying safe from the North Carolina heat and humidity!
